Chanda arrives at Mr. Bateman's office to pick out her little sister, Sara's coffin. No one is with her because of the fact that her step-papa is deadly drunk and her mother is with the sister who just died 2 hours ago. Now Chanda is left to do all of the arranging by herself.
After arranging all of the funeral things, Chanda goes out to meet her friend, Esther who is in the cafe checking her e-mails.
Chanda's family started out in Tiro where Chanda, her Mother, Father, and 2 Brothers, and 3 Sisters. 2 of the sisters died. One day her Father and Uncles argued about farming land so her Father signed up at Bonang and moved over. However, her older sister stayed to marry her boyfriend.
They got few advantages once they moved here. The houses are maded out of cement instead of mud. Her father got a job as a miner with her brothers. They will never go hungry because the company feeds them.
Here Chanda met her best friend, Esther. At school Chanda "SOAKS UP EVERYTHING" says Mr. Selalame, her favorite teacher.
One day an explosion happened and about 30 people died including Chanda's father and 2 brothers. The company gave Chanda's mother money because of their death and they are forced to pay rent. once the money ran out they were forced out of the house.
Chanda's mother got a job as a cleaner for a guy called Isaac Pheto. a year later her 1/2 sister was born, Iris. Isaac molested Chanda. and her mother found him naked on the streets and ran off.
They stayed with Mrs. Tafa. Their neighbor was Mr. Dube and soon he married Chanda's mother and Soly, her 1/2 brother is born. One day he had an "upset stomach" and died because of a stroke.
They met a guy called Jonah, and Sara was born, her 1/2 sister.
At the funeral Jonah didn't show up. They now rarely see him.
Esther's Parents died and the whole family is split up.
Iris acts weird. She says that Sara plays with her and goes to the junkyard to play with her.
Chanda's mother is very sick and saw many doctors and decided to go to Tiro to "get what was stolen from her" few weeks past and no news from her mother. Chanda called to tell her mother of Jonah's death and funeral, but she never showed up. So Chanda goes to Tiro with the money Esther gives her through her earnings as a WHORE!
When Chanda goes to Tiro she finds out that her mother doesn't know who or what is happening so Chanda brings her home. After a while her mother dies and everyone is tested to see is they have AIDS because of the fact that her mother died because of AIDS. Everyone but Esther is infected with AIDS now all Esther can do is hope there is something to prevent the germs from killing her.
after having arranged the funeral things, Chanda doesn´t meet her friend in the cafe, she just looked for her there, because Esther had been there once. In fact, Chanda doesn´t find her at all that day.
And it is only Esther who is infected with AIDS because of her whoring, the others are not infected.
