Koly is a 13 year old girl who is going to get married to a boy she doesn’t know. She meets all of her in-laws. On the day of her marriage she finds out that her husband, Hari is younger than what her in-laws had said. She also finds out that her husband is very ill. Her mother in-law gives her lots of task to accomplish every day. Her husband is going to go to Varanasi. He also begs his parents to bring his wife, Koly.
At Varanasi, Hari is brought into the “holy river” to be healed. However, it doesn’t help and gave him a new symptom of coughing. Hari dies at Varanasi. He is cremated and sprinkled at Varanasi. When they come back Koly’s mother-in-law gives her lots of hard work while Koly’s sister-in-law, Chandra gets all of the light work. Koly also requested to receive fabric and thread to sew. Squeezing in some room Koly is able to make a quilt about Hari and her experience together. After a while of work, her father-in-law teaches Koly to read. Koly’s sister-in-law tells Koly that her parent found a husband for and is going to be married.
Koly’s sister-in-law One day, Koly’s father-in-law comes home early and dies in his room. So Chandra comes back for his funeral. When she comes back, Koly is to treat her as a guest and isn’t able to talk to her until night comes. When Chandra left, Koly and her mother-in-law are losing money and are selling most of their possession to earn food and money. Koly is told that her mother-in-law’s brother is going to take them in.
On the train, they stop at Varanasi. Koly was give 50 rubies to buy food and her mother-in-law left her and Koly is taken in by Kamala by the help of Raji, the boy who took Koly and her mother-in-law to a temple. Kamala also gave her a job. On her 1st day of work, she gave her boss a great idea. One day the woman who owns the house came. She saw Koly’s work on the quilt she had made and brought her to Mr. Das, a rich man who is willing to pay her three times the amount she receives at the job right now. One day her co-worker, Mala and drinks what I believe is wine/beer. She also finds out that one of the wedding dress was stolen by Mala. After a hard day at work, Raja comes back and he asks her to marry him, so now Koly has a new house and has to think about if she is going to marry Raji or not. She finally thinks it over and promises him that she will and prepares a quilt for her dowry. However, her boss promises that if she continues her job at her new house, he will give her a new sari as a dowry.
